The French Connection

Frenchie has quickly become one of Carrington’s most talked-about dining destinations since it first opened as a pop-up inside The Criterion Hotel in July 2024. What began as a limited-time venture swiftly won over locals and visitors alike, prompting the owners to make it a permanent fixture in this surprising yet charming suburb.

The French Connection

The team behind Frenchie are Newcastle and Hunter hospitality veterans Mitchell Steel, Greg Mathew, Luciano Cruz, Rafael Tonon and Ronnie Stricke, well known for their popular Alfie’s Italian in New Lambton as well as other hot spots including MEET, Lucky Duck and Leaves & Fishes. Their combined expertise and passion are evident in every element of Frenchie, from the warm, inviting atmosphere to the carefully crafted menu.

“A French restaurant was always something we had in mind for the space when we purchased The Criterion Hotel,” says Mitchell. “It’s such a beautiful old building and we wanted to try something different – something that felt true to us, the space and also brought a new flavour to Carrington.”

The French Connection

“We launched Frenchie as a 3-month pop-up venue, but the response from locals and the wider community was more than we could’ve hoped for. That early support really encouraged us, and it quickly turned into something we knew we wanted to build on. We’re very grateful to be part of the wonderful Carrington community and proud to be part of the growing dining scene in the suburb.”

At Frenchie, we stay true to the foundations of French cooking – classic techniques, quality produce, and balanced flavours – but we like to give everything a bit of a twist.

Frenchie’s menu strikes a balance between classic French dishes and contemporary twists, featuring standout items like escargot bathed in garlic and XO butter, a rich duck parfait paired with Le Birlou and the signature steak frites that has quickly become a favourite. Complementing the food is an all-French wine list, encouraging diners to indulge in a genuine taste of France with every visit.

“Raf [Executive Chef Rafael Tonon] has a Brazilian-Italian background and is always inspired to bring a fresh perspective to the kitchen. He loves to draw on different cuisines to add new layers to traditional dishes, so a more classic dish might feel familiar but still have something unexpected.”

“It’s French at the core, but with room to play. That might mean using a traditional French method to cook something, but adding ingredients you wouldn’t usually see in a typical French restaurant. We also focus heavily on local and seasonal produce, so the menu is always changing depending on what’s in season right now.”

During the day, Frenchie offers a more casual experience with its “Frenchie by Day” menu, perfect for those looking to enjoy a leisurely lunch. Highlights include a French-inspired cheeseburger and an array of share plates, ideal for pairing with a glass of wine or a specialty coffee. Fridays bring a popular $35 lunch special, drawing in crowds eager to round out the week in style.

For those seeking a special night out, Frenchie’s new ‘Date Night Thursday’ is an experience not to be missed. For $160 per couple, guests are treated to a thoughtfully curated share-style feast that showcases a variety of flavours and textures – from an amuse bouche of French onion soup with Gruyère croutons to perfectly cooked Angus striploin steak with café de Paris butter. The meal is paired with a rotating selection of wines, making it a perfect way to unwind and connect in an intimate setting.

The French Connection

“What we really hope is that people leave Frenchie feeling like they’ve had a great meal and a great time,” says Mitchell. “That’s the heart of it. It’s not fine dining, it’s fun dining. Whether you’re here for a laid-back lunch, a few snacks and a drink, or a special Date Night Thursday, we want it to feel relaxed, welcoming and a bit of a treat. Good food, good company and a place you want to come back to – that’s what we’re all about.”

The atmosphere at Frenchie strikes a lovely balance between the sophisticated charm of a Parisian bistro and the easygoing comfort of a neighbourhood favourite. Soft lighting, moody tones and subtle music create an inviting environment that transports diners to the heart of France. Whether you’re nestled inside or enjoying the fresh air of the courtyard, Frenchie delivers an experience that feels both special and welcoming.

Frenchie has quickly made its mark by bringing genuine French flavours, a passionate team and a
memorable dining experience to Carrington. It’s a must-visit for anyone craving a taste of France
with a local twist.
